Waddells Mill Pond

The Waddells Mill Pond Site is an archaeological site located seven miles northwest of MariannaFlorida[2] On December 15, 1972, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

This was the site of an important late prehistoric mound and village complex. Archaeological excavations at the site during the 1960s and 1970s revealed two mounds and the remains of a circular fortification. The site is believed to have been abandoned prior to the arrival of the Spanish in the region in 1674.

Archaeological research revealed the presence of 2 mounds, a palisaded village and cave habilitations.

17th century Spanish mission of San Carlos de Chacatos may have been located adjacent to the large cave at Waddells Mill Pond.

Franciscan missionaries established this church in 1674 at a Chacato Village somewhere west of the Chipola River.  No evidence that the Spanish were there at Waddells Mill Pond.

Farms started to appear sometime around 1821 when Florida was transferred to the United States from Spain. Between 1821-1845 large plantations were established in the mill pond area. By the time of the Civil War the property was owned by John Waddell. Waddell dam'd the spring flowing across his land to create the mill pond seen today. The property is privately owned except for the dam which is owned by Northwest Florida Management district.  The District hopes to eventually acquire all the land ensuring its permanent preservation.
